About
I'm a professional artist living and working in the Pacific Northwest. After graduating college with a BFA I began my career working as an in house artist focusing on illustration but also doing quite a bit of photo-retouching and design. Also in that time I did a fair bit of pick up work for pen and paper games like Dungeons and Dragons and Magic the Gathering. It was those freelance jobs that opened the door to a ten year career in the video game industry. Though I did a fair bit of production work, including 3D and animation my first love was always illustration and so I eventually focused my efforts to doing concept illustration full time. When I wasn’t making video games I spent my spare time working on my own art and was able to parlay that into a secondary fine art career, painting in oil and showing at galleries around the globe. Eventually I left the world of fixed employment to start a family and focus on a full time freelance career.
These days I am still there. Working as a dad, a husband, an urban rancher and filling all the time in between with whatever artwork I dream up or that comes my way.
F.A.Q.
Where do you get your ideas?
They come from any number of sources. It could be a picture that moved me, a song lyric I thought particularly clever, or even something as simple as a bug or stick I saw out in the yard. From there it’s simply a matter of whittling and shaping that initial spark of inspiration into a full blown image that is uniquely mine.
Who are your favorite artists?
This may sound like a bit of a cop-out but the list is too long to write out. The world is FULL of artists both past and present that inspire me to push myself to achieve new heights. At times the art that inspires me in strikingly different that then art I create and sometimes it’s not even an entire body of another artist work that excites me. It could simply be a single image or even their use of color or shape that moves me. To even begin to list all those artists would leave so many more unmentioned even though their contribution to my artistic self is equally deserving. Okay… to pacify the masses here’s a few: Phil Hale, Mike Mingola, John William Waterhouse, Andrew Wyeth, and Albert Bierstadt.
Do you use AI?
Absolutely not. Not only do I find the use of AI, wether it be as a “tool” or to generate images full cloth a crutch too big to be worth using I think its detriment to the environment, mine and my peers ability to make a living and the future of human creativity is not only not use it in any capacity but to also speak out against it.
What is your medium?
If I’m doing digital illustration I’m working on a Wacom Cintique tablet and a Mac Book Pro. The main applications I use are Corel Painter for a majority of my digital painting and Clip Studio Paint for doing comics. If I’m doing gallery work I paint with Old Holland oil paint, Trekkel brand brushes and I prefer to work on panel, these days Raymar aluminum panels covered with Fabriano hot press watercolor paper.
Why did you decide to become an artist?
Honestly, because I’ve always enjoyed the act of creation. Even from a young age I’ve had love of creating not just images but whole worlds, stories and legends. Professional illustration was simply a logical career path but even if I wasn’t making money at it I don’t think I could ever stop creating.
Are you available to work on my project?
That depends on the project and what you’re willing to pay. If you are serious about the pitch I’m willing to listen.
Do you sell prints?
Currently am not selling prints. I do have some plans to put a store on this site and when I do I’ll have a very obvious link up at the top but as of right now, I do not.
Can you teach me how to make art?
I can show you how I make art but I can’t give you the spark. Every artist is going to approach art in their own unique way and though I can give you all the information you’re going to have to assess and apply that information in your own special way.
But if you want to send me your portfolio I’ll be happy to take a look and give you some pointers.
